My wife and I took your CHL class about two years ago, enjoyed it very much, and I want to come again to brush up on Texas handgun laws.

I keep seeing this sign around Arlington. It isn’t a 30-30 sign. I Googled VCS Art 4413 (29EE) and came up dry.

I’ve been assuming it is obsolete and not legal, but perhaps you can explain it for me?

ans: - certainly not a legal 30-06. I don't know where you saw it, but you may want to be extremely careful since its not legal, but they are trying to tell you they do not want your gun inside. better safe than sorry

Death of parents

On Wednesday, October 16, 1991, Hupp and her parents were having lunch at the Luby's Cafeteria in Killeen. She had left her gun in her car to comply with Texas state law at the time, which forbade carrying a concealed weapon. When George Hennard drove his truck into the cafeteria and opened fire on the patrons, Hupp instinctively reached into her purse for her weapon, but it was in her vehicle. Her father, Al Gratia, tried to rush Hennard and was shot in the chest. As the gunman reloaded, Hupp escaped through a broken window and believed that her mother, Ursula Gratia, was behind her. Hennard put a gun to her mother's head as she cradled her mortally wounded husband. Hupp's mother and father were killed along with twenty-one other persons. Hennard also wounded some twenty others. As a survivor of the Luby's massacre, Hupp testified across the country in support of concealed-handgun laws. She said that had there been a second chance to prevent the slaughter, she would have violated the Texas law and carried the handgun inside her purse into the restaurant[2].

Hupp was awarded the Sybil Ludington Women's Freedom Award by the National Rifle Association. In 1998, Charlton Heston honored Hupp as the first Texan awarded a lifetime NRA membership.

In the state House, Hupp was a member of the House Rural Caucus and the House Veterans and Military Affairs Caucus. In November 2003, Speaker Tom Craddick appointed Hupp as chair of the House select committee on child welfare and foster care. Craddick also named her to chair the Human Services Committee in the 79th Legislature. She also served on the House Law Enforcement Committee.

Hupp has been recognized by many conservative interest groups: the American Family Association, Free Market Foundation, the Texas Association of Business, the Chamber of Commerce, Texas Alliance For Life, Texas Eagle Forum, and the Young Conservatives of Texas. She was rated 100 percent pro-life by the Texas Right to Life Committee.

Hupp is quoted as having said, "How a politician stands on the Second Amendment tells you how he or she views you as an individual... as a trustworthy and productive citizen, or as part of an unruly crowd that needs to be lorded over, controlled, supervised, and taken care of."[6]

Hupp has hosted a radio talk program in the Greater Austin area. She is a co-founder of the Civil Liberties Defense Foundation, a non-profit legal foundation dedicated to providing educational information relating to the preservation of civil liberties guaranteed by the Bill of Rights to the United States Constitution and to providing legal services to protect those rights.

I attended your January 6, 2010, CHL course. During your class, you had mentioned that you had students receive their license in about 4 weeks. I just wanted to let you know that as of yesterday, January 21, 2010, my application was approved and license issued (15 days :D).
I should note that I had submitted my DPS application several weeks prior to your class…also, I had included with my final application certified felony reports from Dallas, Denton, and Tarrant counties. But, I am not sure if any of these affected the turnaround time.
Anyways, I just thought I would let you know.

Hi David,
Here is the chronology of my application for your reference after your 1/4/2010 class.
On Monday 1/5/2010 I mailed my completed application via Priority Mail with a tracking number (Priority Mail is a requirement for tracking ~$6).
On Wednesday 1/7/2010 the package arrived at the DPS according to the tracking.
I started checking the status on the DPS site daily.
On Friday 1/9/2010 the DPS updated my application status on their tracker to "Processing Application".
On Friday 1/22/2010 the DPS updated my application status to "Application Completed - license issued or certificate active".
On Wednesday 1/26/2010 I received my CHL card in the mail.
A total of 21 days, including mail delivery both ways. That is pretty fast.
I've passed your web site and details on to several people. And I'll be back for my renewal when it's due.

This was a very enjoyable class. David was a great instructor. He is funny and very entertaining. David had prepared a slide show in Power Point to help us follow along with the lecture. The slide show was great as David had embellished it with some great video clips from the internet. Some were just funny and some showed a particular point that we were discussing. Today being the 20th of Aug 2007. My wife and I attended the CHL class presented by Mr David Gilreath, ie; chltx.com yesterday the 19 of Aug. I wanted to e-mail David to express our satisfaction with his presentation. Hence I found the student blog. Trent's Mindmelt.My thoughts and opinion.To Mr David Gilreath, Thank You for your service to our country and for your continued service your providing today with CHL training.We both found this class presentation to be top notch. Well done! Anyone looking to obtain this training, being their initial or renewal, would be well served here. We used chltex.com and linked with DPS, made online application made secure payment of fee's and received our packets in 4 days. I then contacted David and set our class date. We had 6 people in our class. 4 males 2 females. Good group of people. Some had more handgun experience than others as one might expect. Mr Gilreath conducted a safe range environment that addressed all needs of those present without intimidation. Important point, some may have apprehension about shooting for record or to qualify if you will. With Mr Gilreath's demeanor as range officer - instructor you will qualify. Classroom was relaxed, flowing and involved for us. Interesting with facts and discussion. Breaks to refresh and interact in a more causal setting.Complete satisfaction with class. Prints, photo's notary and his review of all paperwork to be submitted. Good value. It will cost $1.14 to mail your package.
Our overall rating will be A. A-plus could be achieved with some good Texas Bar-B-Q being catered.

I took my CHL class with Mr Gilreath back in April of this year and I must say, his class was EXCELLENT! I had heard horror stories about these classes being really boring, but his was quite the opposite. He took care of everything too; application, pics, fingerprints, etc.We had a minor issue with the range portion of the class because Bass Pro in Grapevine doesn't allow shooting at the DPS mandated targets because they "look like people and we don't shoot at people"(per range mgr at BPS) so we went to Winchester Gallery in Fort Worth instead. (only reason I mention this about the shooting portion is because I want everyone to know how ridiculous Bass Pro is with their range policies, has nothing to do with Mr Gilreath) When it comes time for renewal I will definitely be attending Mr Gilreath's class again.- Jay

David,Just wanted to let you know that I mailed my completed application packet the Saturday after Thanksgiving (11/28) and saw online on 12/31 that my license was issued, then received it in the mail today with a postmark of yesterday.
Thanks for the info you provided in the course as well as the high quality of the fingerprinting and photography, which I am sure helped in getting my license issued so quickly.
My son is now back from Iraq and plans to attend one of your courses soon so he can get his license issued as well.

I attended your class on August 2,2009. I should have sent this months ago but never got around to it. I wanted to personally thank you for an outstanding CHL class, the itinerary was straight forward and never boring and your degree of professionalism was superb.
You took the time to make sure everyone knew the basics, so they could pass the handgun proficiency portion of the test, even if they were not a marksman. You conducted one of the safest range classes I have ever attended. Your professional, straight forward, no BS attitude made for a great learning environment, especially for those of us who don't need all of the comedy and drama I have heard about from other instructors.

Attention was paid to every detail and was very informative. I received my CHL on October 20,2009 and have carried everyday since. I hope I never need it, but if I do, it will be with me. You made a lasting impression on me as to the importance of " Carry everywhere you go." I can't imagine being without my gun now.

I highly recommend you as a CHL instructor.

  I wanted to follow up with you I had taken your class back on July 3rd and received my CHL after 7 weeks of waiting. I would like to thank you for the experience and also share with you and your future classes what an experience it has been being able to legally carry a loaded firearm on my person. Just this past Labor Day I felt great knowing I can now carry legally and the best case scenario played out for me. Me and some friends went to Canyon Lake for the holiday and enjoyed a fun day out boating swimming and so forth. After we all were finished we packed up as anyone would do and were getting ready to leave when two young ladies I was with needed to use the restroom. As we stopped at the local park bathroom I noticed a individual who seemed to be (not the stand up citizen) and kept an eye on him. When the 2 young ladies I was with were coming back to the car he started to approach and talk un lady like to them and then realized they were with me and told me I needed to share as he just got out of prison after 10 years and needed to have some fun. I kindly asked the girls to just get in the car and asked him to behave. Of course he did not like my attitude and started to shout different things at me and the girls, it was at that point I stepped from behind the door with my hand on my firearm and insisted that he kindly walk away and leave the ladies be. Not knowing if he realized my hand was possibly on my weapon in preparedness to protect both myself and the 2 young ladies or not I cannot stress to your future classes how relieved I was knowing that I am now in a better position to protect myself as well as family and friends.
